Rockfall mitigation mesh and barrier system on a Hawaii cliff face

ROCKFALL MITIGATION

Containing the Hazard Before It Reaches the Road

ROCKFALL PROTECTION IN HAWAII

Hawaii's volcanic cliffs, weathered basalt, and steep road cuts create persistent rockfall hazards that threaten highways, infrastructure, and people. Slope Solutions Hawaii specializes in identifying, assessing, and mitigating these hazards using proven systems designed for Hawaii's unique geology.

We work directly with HDOT, county agencies, and private clients to design and install the right combination of passive and active protection — from manual scaling to high-energy barrier systems — keeping roads open and people safe.

PROTECTION SYSTEMS & METHODS

MANUAL & MECHANICAL SCALING

Removal of loose, unstable rock by hand tools or mechanical equipment before it can fall. The first line of defense and often the most cost-effective hazard reduction measure.

DRAPED MESH SYSTEMS

High-tensile steel wire mesh draped over rock faces to guide falling debris to the toe of the slope, preventing it from reaching the road or structure below.

PINNED MESH SYSTEMS

Mesh anchored directly to the rock face with grouted pins or bolts to hold unstable blocks in place and prevent detachment.

ROCKFALL BARRIERS & FENCES

Flexible, high-energy-absorbing barrier systems installed at the base or mid-slope to intercept and retain falling rock. Rated systems from 500 kJ to 5,000 kJ and above.

ATTENUATOR FENCES

Slope-face fences that slow and redirect rolling or bouncing rock debris, reducing the energy and trajectory of rockfall before it reaches a barrier or roadway.

ROCK BOLTING & DOWELING

Grouted steel bolts or dowels drilled into the rock mass to reinforce fractured zones, tie unstable blocks to competent rock, and prevent wedge or planar failures.

SHOTCRETE SEALING

Pneumatically applied concrete over fractured or weathered rock faces to seal discontinuities, prevent water infiltration, and reduce freeze-thaw and root-driven degradation.

CATCHMENT DITCHES & BERMS

Graded ditches or compacted berms at the slope toe designed to catch and contain debris that reaches the bottom, protecting roads and structures from direct impact.

WHY ROCKFALL MITIGATION MATTERS IN HAWAII

VOLCANIC GEOLOGY

Hawaii's basalt and volcanic tuff weather rapidly, creating persistent zones of loose, fractured rock that can mobilize with little warning — especially after heavy rain.

HIGH RAINFALL

Kauai receives some of the highest rainfall totals in the world. Water infiltration into rock joints accelerates weathering, reduces friction, and dramatically increases rockfall frequency.

CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Many of Hawaii's highways run directly below steep volcanic cliffs. A single rockfall event can close a road for days — or injure someone. Proactive mitigation keeps infrastructure open and people safe.

LOCAL EXPERTISE

We know Hawaii's rock. Our crews have worked on some of the most challenging rockfall sites across the islands and understand how local geology, weather, and site access shape the right solution.
